A windlass is a type of winch used on boats and ships to drop and hoist anchors. Manual windlasses come with a handle that is turned to wind up the rope or chain to which the anchor is attached.

Windlass and Capstan

Windlass and capstan are also can be called two special kinds of winches.Windlass usually don’t have a tradional “drum”,instead its design is modified.The Capstan is a machine with a vertically installed winch, which can wind but not store the rope under power drive.
